Stunning, diorama illustrations bring to life this lullaby of a picture book about celebrating everyday things that make life wonderful.
I am thankful for a home where I am safe and warm.
Thankful for parents who read me stories and comb my hair gently, gently.
Who whisper the same poem every night when they tuck me in.
When the first snow falls, a little girl writes down the things she’s thankful for on strips of paper and links them together. As one idea leads to another, her chain grows longer. There’s so much good in her life: a friend, things that are warm, things that are cold, color, things that can be fixed. This beautiful story is a much-needed reminder to observe and honor life’s small joys.

When a high school basketball star goes missing, a town’s secrets are exposed in this edge-of-your seat, addictive read.
At 8:53 pm, thousands of people watched as Jake Foster secured the state title for his basketball team with his signature fadeaway. But by the next morning, he’s disappeared without a trace. Nobody has any idea where he is: not his best friend who knows him better than anyone else, not his ex-girlfriend who may still have feelings for him, not even his little brother who never expected Jake to abandon him. Rumors abound regarding Jake’s whereabouts. Was he abducted? Did he run away to try to take his game to the next level? Or is it something else, something darker–something they should have seen coming?
Told from the points of view of those closest to Jake, this gripping, suspenseful novel reminds us that the people we think we know best are sometimes hiding the most painful secrets.
Katie and Ana are the kind of friends who share everything with each other. But there are some things you can’t even share with your best friend.
Katie has always known she was adopted, but recently she’s been wondering about her birth parents and her birthplace. She worries that saying this out loud—even to her best friend—could mess up the perfect family she has now.
Ana’s family has been falling apart ever since her dad left, and it’s up to her to hold it together. But Ana fears no matter how hard she tries, her family may never be whole again.
At a time when they need each other the most, the links between the girls are beginning to break. Before they lose each other, they must work through the tangles of secrets to the shining truth underneath: friendship, just like family, is worth fighting for.

For three ten-year-old girls, their once simple worlds are starting to feel too big.
Painfully shy Grace dreads starting fifth grade now that her best friend has moved away. Jada hopes she’ll stop feeling so alone if she finds the mother who left years ago. And Malia fears the arrival of her new baby sister will forever change the family she loves.
When the girls each find a mysterious treasure box in their library and begin to fill the box with their own precious things, they start to feel less alone. But it’s up to Grace, Jada, and Malia to take the treasures and turn them into something more: true friendship.

However, Wonderland has vastly changed. Some of the characters that Tyrus remembers from the book have been transformed into angry monsters.
Helped by the Cheshire Cat and a new character, Sylvan, a young rabbit, Celia and Tyrus desperately work to solve puzzles and riddles, looking for a way out of Wonderland. But the danger increases when the Queen of Hearts begins hunting them, believing the two young visitors hold the key to opening multiple portals to multiple worlds, and she will stop at nothing to capture them.

Brock Dethier

Brock Dethier runs the composition program at Utah State University, writes books for composition teachers and students, and each fall prepares a new group of graduate instructors to teach the courses that so many students dread. He has published a poetry chapbook, Ancestor Worship, and individual poems in venues from Mothering to The Epigrammatist to Sugar House Review.
Reclamation begins with a childhood trauma that reverberates throughout the book and especially the first section, “Why Worry.” The second section, “The Horns of Perception,” chronicles the vagaries of trying to turn trauma (or anything else) into art, while the third section, “Trying Not to Limp,” tackles addiction, alcoholism, and the dissolution of bodies and relationships. Finally, “Bag Full of Stars” details attempts to put the trauma aside to find contentment and moments of joy.
Much of the emotional content of Reclamation is anything but easy, but readers are likely to, in the words of the final poem, “find ourselves in flow, / reach the other side and cheer.”

In this classroom-tested approach to writing, Brock Dethier teaches readers how to analyze and write twenty-one genres that students are likely to encounter in college and beyond. This practical, student-friendly, task-oriented text confidently guides writers through step-by-step processes, reducing the anxiety commonly associated with writing tasks.
In the first section, Dethier efficiently presents each genre, providing models; a description of the genres’ purpose, context, and discourse; and suggestions for writing activities or “moves” that writers can use to get words on the page and accomplish their writing tasks. The second section explains these moves, over two hundred of them, in chapters ranging from “Solve Your Process Problems” and “Discover” to “Revise” and “Present.” Applicable to any writing task or genre, these moves help students overcome writing blocks and develop a piece of writing from the first glimmers of an idea to its presentation.
This approach to managing the complexity and challenge of writing in college strives to be useful, flexible, eclectic, and brief—a valuable resource for students learning to negotiate unfamiliar writing situations.

We can all make a difference.
Elementary-school teacher Diane Trull’s life-defining moment happened when her fourth-grade reading class saw a photo of a cardboard box overflowing with homeless puppies. Her young students were determined to save these lost pups and others like them. In that moment, the Dalhart Animal Wellness Group and Sanctuary—known as DAWGS—was born.
How Trull and her fourth graders started their own animal shelter is a story of dedication, commitment, and perseverance. Trull shares inspiring stories about animals and animal lovers of all ages in this moving story of hope and compassion. DAWGS is a testament to how love and a strong measure of determination can offer second chances—one animal, one child, and one day at a time.

Nine-year-old Susanna Hutchison witnessed the massacre of her mother and seven siblings before being taken captive by the tribe who slaughtered her family and burned their home to the ground. Eventually, she found a place and a family in the Indian village.
When a group of Dutch discovered her years later, she begged to stay with the Indians. But they and the Dutch traded goods for the white girl, and Susanna was forced to leave the village.
Returned to Boston and to her brother, Susanna finds everything strange. Now fifteen, she is an outsider among her own people. John Winthrop and the other local authorities are watching her and her brother closely. They have determined that Susanna will conform to the strict society and not become like her outspoken, renegade mother Anne Hutchison.
Susanna is not even sure she wants acceptance back into Puritan society, where she feels like an object of pity and scorn. And she certainly does not welcome the attentions of their tall young neighbor, John Cole.
Caught between two worlds and belonging to neither, Susanna wonders how she can possibly build a new life out of the ashes of what went before.

Young English noblewoman, Anne Ayscough, lived during the turbulent times of Henry VIII, when Protestant reformist ideas clashed violently against entrenched Catholicism.
Yet many, especially the wealthy, owned William Tyndale’s New Testament, including the household of Sir William Ayscough in Lincolnshire. In her family home, Anne grew in an atmosphere of openness, gleaning new ideas from her brothers who were educated at Cambridge, a hotbed of Protestant ideals.
At the age of fifteen, Anne’s life changed drastically. Her older sister Martha, betrothed to a son of a family staunch in the Catholic faith, contracted a fever and died. With the financial arrangements for the marriage already in place, Anne’s father ordered her to stand for her dead sister, forcing his daughter to enter a loveless marriage.
England’s religious war became Anne’s as she clung tight to her own ideals in her husband’s house. This eventually brought her into the center of the vicious political and religious battles where she was faced with a choice.
Anne could deny the truths she had embraced as a young woman and live, or hold fast to her beliefs and be put to death.

As a young nobleman at the court of Jerusalem, Daniel’s life is one of privilege. His childhood friend, Sarai, is betrothed to him. Sarai’s future also stretches securely before her. She will marry the boy she loves and they will live together in their beloved homeland.
But outside the city gates waits Judah’s conqueror, Nebuchadnezzar, prince of Babylon, who demands a heavy price for peace. He takes treasures from the great temple of Jerusalem and hostages from among the promising young scholars, who will serve him in the court at Babylon.
Daniel’s dreams are filled with strange images of things he has never seen. When Daniel’s father ensures that he is one of the young men selected, the dreams become frighteningly real.
The prophet Jeremiah’s dire warnings have come to pass for Daniel, Sarai and for all of Judah–The voice of mirth and gladness are taken; the voice of the bride and bridegroom, and the sound of the millstones and the light of the candle.
Sarai in Jerusalem and Daniel in Babylon will face the same challenge: to keep hope bright as darkness closes in.

Three thousand Jews have been brought as hostages to Babylon, as King Nebuchadnezzar continues his subjugation of the land of Judah. Daniel, now governor of the province of Babylon, is in a position to aid his people as they resettle outside of the ancient city of Nippur.
Daniel and Sarai are briefly reunited after eight long years of separation, but obstacles remain before they can be together. Daniel must secure permission to marry from King Nebuchadnezzar, whose increasingly erratic behavior has Daniel fearing for the king’s sanity and for the safety of his people.
As the Jews strive to adjust and even prosper in the land of their enemies, their future remains uncertain. Daniel, in his position of power, moderates King Nebuchadnezzar’s erratic behavior toward the Jewish captives. But if he loses his position, the people will suffer.
Meanwhile, the young and foolish Jehoaichin, puppet-ruler back in Jerusalem, continues to defy the Babylonian king, whose patience toward the Jews is wearing thin.
Daniel and Sarai face a precarious future, both for themselves and their people.

Roman Britannia, 61 A.D. – Marcus Scribonius-a Christian convert of scarcely five years and an Option in the Roman Army, second-in-command of a century of eighty men-has just survived a horrific battle against Boudicca and her Celtic rebels. Although Roman casualties were astonishingly light, one of those casualties was Marcus’s beloved commander and mentor. Now serving under the command of a new centurion-who, for reasons Marcus cannot comprehend, already hates him-Marcus and his century are given a secret mission: an armed reconnaissance mission deep into hostile territory to investigate the repeated manifestations of a Celtic
god-Arawn, Lord of the Dead.
Marcus possesses the Gift of Prophecy, although for the most part, he is unable to understand the prophecies he transcribes onto his scroll. But he does understand two things-he will face Arawn,
and a great tribulation will come into his life. That tribulation arrives in the form of disturbing young woman-Maelona, the slave of his new commander. Maelona frightens Marcus, because she was once one of the terrifying Witches of Mona before she was captured, used, and enslaved. However, a prophecy states that Marcus must protect her at all costs.
Along their march deep into Cambria (Wales), Marcus and his century camp near an ancient circle of standing stones. During the night, one of the burial mounds near the stone circle opens, and out of it crawls an ancient horror. And legionnaires begin to die.

Llyrica sent Edgar to Hell: Hades Penal Colony on the forbidden moon Callisto. Now Edgar must escape to save her.
Edgar has awoken in Hell–or more specifically, in the Hades Penal Colony on Callisto, moon of Jupiter. The year is 2175, and interplanetary freighter captain, Edgar Kent Cordell, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for a murder he didn’t commit. He was framed by his best friend and business partner, Edmund Reagan, his ex-wife, Llyrica, and Edgar’s cargomaster, Georgie “Goner” Cornwall.
Hades is a hellish place, populated with murderers and rapists, the worst of the worst–all of them male. There is no warden. There are no guards. All sentences are for life. There is no reprieve, no appeal, and no escape from Hades. No ship ever lands there–it is forbidden and illegal. Prisoners and necessary supplies are dropped from orbit. A brutal gang-lord rules–a man who calls himself “Lord Lucifer.”
Within an hour of his arrival, Edgar is savagely beaten and raped. Within days, his face is disfigured and his throat is cut. But Edgar survives.
No ship ever lands on Callisto… that is, until a shuttle crash-lands. There is only one survivor–Llyrica, Edgar’s ex-wife, the one person in all the solar system Edgar hates most–the only woman Edgar has ever loved. No woman can survive on Callisto. There is a plague on the moon that kills all females. When the colony was originally settled, all the women and girls became sick. 80% of them died before the colony could be evacuated. And then there is the danger from the prisoners themselves.
Edgar must find a way to protect Llyrica from the other men, get her off-world, and escape from Hades. Llyrica is blinded in the crash. Edgar, with his scarred voice and face, is unrecognizable to her. She has no idea who her protector is. And Edgar isn’t about to reveal his identity. He assumes the persona of mad Tom Bedlam (his “prison name”). Edgar will save Llyrica, he will protect her, but he desperately needs to know why she betrayed him… and what she was doing on the forbidden moon Callisto.

Paul was a Roman.
Yes, the apostle was raised as a devout Jew and later became a Christian, but he was a citizen of the Roman Empire. He lived in a Roman world. In his Epistle to the Ephesians, Paul wrote to an audience of Christians living in a Roman world, under Roman rule. They had all seen Roman legionnaires and were familiar with the armor and weapons carried by a typical Roman soldier. As contemporary Christians, we have a tendency to picture Sir Lancelot on his horse. We are using the wrong imagery. We miss the powerful symbolism of Paul’s analogy. There is deep meaning in each of the symbols that Paul uses –symbols that we gloss over or fail entirely to understand–symbols that Paul’s audience readily understood.

Take stories detailing all the nastiest parts of human behavior, from theft to murder to mayhem, throw in some of the “lesser” darkness that humans can provide during the holidays, and assemble them into one volume—welcome to Bloody Christmas.
These stories, dark and vicious, form the perfect antidote to the holiday season’s sugary sweetness. So, consider this the savory part of the holidays for those whose reading tastes get darker in the darkest part of the year.
As Alfred Hitchcock used to say, read these stories with the lights on—and the doors locked, curtains drawn, and protective gear at hand. One never knows what lurks in the darkness.

Humanity nearly went extinct 100 years ago. Now, if your heartbeat goes over 140, you die.
At least, that’s what the New Chapter preaches. But Nik Granjer knows they’re lying about the Bug. Sure, it was the Bug that wiped out more than ninety percent of humanity a hundred years ago, but that’s ancient history.
The Bug has to be gone by now.
Except everyone thinks that the Bug still kills anyone whose heart rate goes over 140 beats per minutes. Which is why the Prime Administrator gave citizens the Papas: digital wrist monitors that knock people out when their heart rate gets too high. The Papas saved the last of humanity.
But one night after curfew, on the border of New Frisko, Nik tampers with his Papa with terrible consequences. And when a brutal, high-tech enforcement squad from the city shows up, Nik goes on the run.
Outcast and desperate for allies, Nik’s only hope is to unearth the truth about the Prime Administrator and the origin of the Bug. And stay alive in the process. If he fails, he could be the only witness to the final extinction of humanity.

They thought they had won.
They were wrong.
Two months after the attack on New Frisko, Nik returns to camp to discover that Prime Administrator Holland’s assassins have killed or captured most of their group- including Nik’s parents. Barely escaping with their lives, Nik and his friends race to save their loved ones.
Chasing clues and legends, they discover people and a world they only knew through distorted propaganda. Desperate to free their families and stop Holland, Nik and his friends travel through what’s left of America’s west coast, unearthing an old, dead city that might hold the key to humanity’s survival.
But with brain-modified assassins on their heels, unimaginable technology being thrown against them, and what seems like an entire world out to kill them, can Nik and his friends make it in time to save what’s left of humanity? Or will the Bug and the New Chapter complete their stranglehold on mankind?

WELCOME TO THE MOTHERHOOD is written by an everyday mother of five children. Learn about key points in parenting through humor and love. A real mother’s guide to getting through motherhood with a smile and some of your wits about you. Pointers on how to get through turbulent times with your children, advice from several generations of mothers, and humorous tried and true mothering techniques.
Examples:
“BIOHAZARD AREA! Enter at your own risk!” printed on plain white paper with black marker is taped to my teenage son’s bedroom door.
Signs are common in my home, since one of my Motherhood Mottos is “Talk is cheap, signs are priceless.” I have created many signs during the past 33 years of mothering—the kinds of signs that one hangs most often on walls, fridges, doors and occasionally bathroom mirrors.
My fascination with signs started in the early years of raising my five bright and busy children. I drew pictures instead of words, such as hands covered with bubbles to remind them to wash, a half-made bed to prompt them to make their bed and even a picture of a smiling face, meaning “the day will be better if you smile.”
I also made many a chore chart with various point systems. My children used shiny star stickers to mark their own achievements, once they were old enough to not eat the stickers. The most successful system I created was a colorful weekly chore graph where each child could earn brightly wrapped dollar-store toys from a basket. I learned early that the reward system, more commonly known as bribery, is a valuable parenting tool.
As the years have flown by, I have collected witty signs of our time that often became house rules, such as “If you are mean, cranky or irritating, there will be an extra charge for just having to put up with you.”
An old Mother Nature saying that may or may not be true comes to mind:
“Teenagers are why some mothers eat their young.” I did not post this one, although I thought about it a few times.
I’m also a believer in using signs for guests and extended family. One very useful notice reads:
“If you want to see me, drop by any time.
If you want to see my house, make an appointment.”
I’ve also framed quotes of my own creation that I’m convinced, or deluded, will change the course of each of my children’s lives, including:
“Seek the Truth! Tell the truth! Live the Truth!”
“When tempted, ask: What does it do for me? What does it do to me?”
“Tears are the diamonds of life.”
I’m greatly inspired by quotes from Abraham Lincoln. I post them on cupboards and bathroom mirrors. These four speak volumes about what I want my children to identify with and make a part of their personal value system:
“Be sure you put your feet in the right place, then stand firm.”
“We should be too big to take offense and too noble to give it.”
“You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today.”
“Whatever you are, be a good one.”
“Return with Honor” a common sign seen in many homes, hangs on the inside of the main door, so the children have a reminder of expectations every time they leave.
Other good, solid, children building quotes that hang in our family room include:
“Faith, Family, Friends”
“Happiness is being married to your best friend.”
“Forever, for always, and no matter what.”
My expertise in sign making seems to have gravitated to signs for bedroom doors. I have often looked into my children’s jungles—I mean bedrooms—and thought how much easier it would be for me to tidy up rather than battle with them to do it themselves. Each time, however, I came to the same realization—I wouldn’t be doing the little darlings any favors if I jumped in and bulldozed the place. I arrived at this ultimate truth a long time ago: I would be derelict in my duties if I did not teach them to take care of their own space.
Prayer and patience are major tools for Moms. Motherhood is one of the greatest most rewarding and worthwhile sacrifice on this planet.
